Introduction

As Ecotourism has become more popular, there has been a determination from several international ecotourism leading bodies to define and steer the development of ecotourism activities. This culminated in 2002 with an international conference which helped to set out the main criteria. Since then, ecotourism has developed quickly at a country wide level and many individual countries have set up their own ecotourism development and marketing organisations mainly to promote ecotourism within their own countries and sectors. These local ecotourism leading bodies should be taking on board the policies that have been agreed at international level - but we shall see.
