Caribou are found in Alaska and Canada. Caribou used to live in Maine and the northern Great Lakes states, but they are no longer found in those areas. A small, endangered woodland caribou herd exists in northern Idaho and northwest Montana. There are currently three very large herds of caribou, the Western Arctic herd in northwest Alaska, the George River herd in northern Quebec and the Taimyr Peninsula herd in Siberia. Each herd is currently estimated at close to 500,000 or more individuals.

In Canada, the woodland caribou is under threat from extensive logging operations. Because the caribou need the boreal forest to survive, the destruction of this habitat has put this animal at risk of extinction. Logging and logging roads also attract deer, deer diseases and moose, which bring in predators such as hunters, wolves and bears. In May 2002, the Canadian Species at Risk Act listed the Atlantic-Gaspésie population of Woodland Caribou as endangered.

In spring the Porcupine caribou herd migrates hundreds of miles from winter ranges located south of the Brooks Range in Alaska, and from areas in Yukon Territory, to its traditional calving grounds on the Arctic Refuge's coastal plain and foothills.

Say NO to caribou hunting. I personally find it repulsive that any animal is hunted for the so called "pleasure" of a kill. In England, they finally stopped hunting live foxes in 2006 and are now able to run the foxhound dogs after scent trails. What kind of person thinks that it is OK to hunt and kill a wild animal under the auspices of a so called sport. Do not under any circumstances consider Caribou hunting as an ecotourism activity - it is NOT
