Protecting
endangered species (save the whales)
Plant
and animal species are the foundation of healthy
ecosystems. Humans depend on ecosystems such as
coastal estuaries, prairie grasslands and ancient
forests to purify their air, clean their water,
and supply them with food. When species become
endangered, it is an indicator that the health
of these vital ecosystems is beginning to unravel.

Be a responsible ecotourist and protect
endangered species
When
you travel on your ecotrip, do not purchase or
attempt to bring back artifacts which are clearly
animal trophies or aphrodisiacs which contain
animal products. Make it your responsibility to
dispose of your refuse appropriately. Try to ensure
that you book your ecotours with responsible agents
who know about the the impact on local species
- don't be afraid to ask questions. If you get
hooked on one particular species, then join a
group so you can learn more and even assist in
influencing change eg - save
the whales
What
endangered species are protected ?
The
Convention on International Trade in Endangered
Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) is the
main source of registration. Roughly 5,000 endangered
species of animals and 28,000 endangered species
of plants are protected by CITES against over-exploitation
through international trade. Endangered
species and ecotourism
The endangered species are categorised according
to how threatened they are by international trade.
They include some whole groups, such as primates,
cetaceans (whales, dolphins and porpoises), sea
turtles, parrots, corals, cacti and orchids. But
in some cases only a subspecies or geographically
separate population of a species (for example
the population of just one country) is listed.
Endangered
species and ecotourism
Any
type of wild plant or animal may be included in
the list
of endangered species and the species act
protected by CITES and indeed, the range of wildlife
species included extends from leeches to lions
and from pine trees to pitcher plants. While the
more charismatic creatures, such as bears and
whales (save the whales from Japanese whaling
fleets), may be the better known examples of CITES
species, the most numerous groups include many
less popularized plants and animals, such as aloes,
corals, mussels and frogs.
